In electronics manufacturing, finished product assembly — sometimes called box build, system integration, or electromechanical assembly — combines a tested PCBA with enclosures, wiring harnesses, connectors, human-machine interfaces, and other modules to produce a packaged product that can be delivered directly to the end user. It is different from PCB assembly. PCB assembly solders components onto a bare board and produces a PCBA; finished product assembly takes that PCBA and builds the complete product around it.
While every product is different, most projects follow the same basic flow: material preparation, sub-assembly, board installation, wiring and integration, sealing, testing, and packaging.
Before assembly begins, all parts are gathered and checked against the bill of materials. This includes the tested PCBA, enclosures, cables, connectors, fasteners, labels, and packaging materials. Careful component management matters here: checking quantities, specifications, and quality up front prevents delays and reduces the risk of assembly defects.
For complex products, parts are often pre-assembled into smaller units before final integration. Cable and connector assemblies, heat sinks and brackets, and small functional modules are built and checked separately. This improves efficiency, reduces errors during final assembly, and makes troubleshooting easier.
The tested PCBA is fixed into its designated position inside the enclosure using screws, clips, or thermal adhesives. Clearances are carefully maintained so the board does not collide with other components, and heat dissipation is considered for high-power products.
Cables, wire harnesses, connectors, and mechanical parts are installed and routed. Cable routing must be secure and tidy to avoid interference, wear, and poor electrical connections. For products that include software, firmware loading and configuration are handled at this stage.
Once the internal components are installed, the enclosure is closed and secured. Sealing protects the internal electronics from dust, moisture, and impact, and gives the product a clean, finished appearance.
The assembled unit is tested as a complete product. This goes beyond board-level testing: power-on behavior, button response, display output, and communication are all verified. Product labels, serial numbers, carton labels, accessories, and manuals are applied, and the finished units are packed in protective packaging ready for shipment.
