A solder pallet — also called a wave solder pallet, carrier, or fixture — is a custom tool used in wave soldering to carry a printed circuit board and protect the parts on it that should never touch molten solder. It sits between the board and the solder wave, holding the PCB in place while only the through-hole pins that need soldering are exposed.
Wave soldering is a high-speed process used to solder through-hole components. The board travels across a wave of molten solder, and every surface that meets the wave gets wetted with solder. That is exactly what you want for the pins of connectors, headers, and transformers. But most modern boards are mixed: they carry surface-mount components on one or both sides alongside through-hole parts. Those SMT parts, and any heat-sensitive or plastic-bodied components, must never touch the solder or the preheat zone. A solder pallet solves this by shielding everything that should stay dry and exposing only the joints that need to be soldered.
A well-designed pallet does several jobs at once, and each one has a direct effect on quality and cost:
A pallet only works well if it is designed for the specific board. The aperture walls around each pin need to be chamfered on the solder side so the wave can reach the joint; thick, square walls create a shadow that leaves some pins dry and forces manual rework. Gas relief channels let flux fumes escape so they do not form voids inside the joint. The material matters too: composite pallets such as Durostone handle most boards cost-effectively, while titanium inserts are used when clearances are too tight for a composite wall to stay rigid.
The real value of a solder pallet shows up on the production floor. It removes the need for manual taping and masking, cuts rework caused by skips and bridges, keeps components from floating out of position, and lets a board run through the wave in seconds instead of minutes.
