As electronic devices keep shrinking, board assemblies now carry components so small that they are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Among the smallest are 01005 components, which measure just 0.4 mm × 0.2 mm and weigh about 0.04 mg. Understanding 01005 component placement capability is essential for any manufacturer that builds compact, high-density electronics.
The term "01005" comes from the imperial package code for a chip component that is 10 mils long and 5 mils wide (a mil is one-thousandth of an inch). In metric terms, that is a body of roughly 0.4 mm × 0.2 mm × 0.15 mm. For comparison, a grain of table salt is about 0.3 mm across, so a 01005 part is only slightly larger than a single salt grain.
Because they occupy so little board area, 01005 parts let designers place far more functionality in a limited footprint. They are increasingly used in mobile devices, wearables, medical instruments, communication modules, and new-energy control boards. At the same time, their tiny size makes them demanding to handle, print, place, and inspect in production. That is why SMT assembly lines that advertise 01005 capability must show real precision at every step.
Placement capability is the ability of a pick-and-place machine to take a component from a feeder and position it on the board pad within a specified tolerance. In a typical SMT assembly flow, this is one of several tolerance sources that add up across printing, placement, and reflow.
For standard parts, small placement errors are often corrected by the self-alignment effect of molten solder during reflow. 01005 parts, however, have very little solder under them, so this self-correction is almost absent. Any misalignment larger than a tiny amount is not automatically repaired and can produce a defective or unreliable joint. Placement accuracy here therefore matters more than for larger components.
Achieving dependable 01005 results is not a single machine setting but a combination of careful choices across the whole process.
The placement machine is the heart of 01005 capability. It must offer placement accuracy of roughly ±30 µm or better, high-resolution vision alignment, specialized micro-component nozzles, and stable feeder systems. A machine designed for large parts cannot consistently deliver the repeatability that 01005 devices demand. Farway uses Yamaha medium- and high-speed placement machines on its two SMT lines, which support the tight tolerances required for micro-component work.
Accurate solder deposition is just as important as accurate placement. For 01005 pads, stencil thickness is typically kept around 80–100 µm, using laser-cut or electroformed stencils with optimized aperture geometry and a nano-coated surface for clean paste release. Fine solder paste, such as Type 4 or Type 5 powder with stable viscosity and strong anti-slump behavior, helps prevent bridging or insufficient solder on tiny pads.
Because 01005 parts are so small, defects can hide from ordinary checks. Advanced lines rely on SPI (solder paste inspection) to measure paste volume, height, and alignment before placement, then AOI optical inspection and X-ray inspection after reflow to catch tombstoning, bridges, or misaligned joints. Farway's PCBA testing and inspection equipment includes SPI solder-paste inspection, AOI optical inspection, and X-ray inspection, together with FAI, ICT, FCT, and thermal imaging to verify both solder quality and board function.
A stable reflow profile is needed to avoid tombstoning, component movement, or weak joints. Temperature ramp rate, soak time, peak temperature, and cooling rate all need to be tuned for each design. Equally, micro components are sensitive to air movement and static. A clean environment with stable temperature and humidity, together with ESD protection, reduces the chance of parts being moved or damaged before they are soldered.
Placement accuracy has a direct effect on yield and reliability. Even small variations can produce tombstoning, short circuits, open joints, or misaligned components after reflow, all of which raise rework and scrap costs. The firms that handle 01005 well are those that combine precision equipment, sound process control, and disciplined inspection across the whole line.
As products continue to shrink, demand for high-density boards built from ultra-miniature components keeps growing. Working with a partner that demonstrates genuine 01005 placement capability gives designers the confidence that small parts will be assembled accurately, inspected thoroughly, and delivered reliably.
