What to look for in a conformal coating brush

  • Online marketplaces. Amazon, AliExpress, eBay and Taobao all stock conformal coating brushes in single units and small packs. Search terms such as "conformal coating brush" or "three-proof paint brush" bring up plenty of options. This route is fine for a few brushes for prototyping or touch-up, but quality varies, so check bristle material and reviews.
  • Specialist coating suppliers. Companies that sell conformal coating materials usually sell the brushes that go with them. These suppliers understand solvent compatibility and often recommend the right brush for the coating you are using, which removes a lot of guesswork.

Brush application tips that actually work

Brushing is the simplest and least expensive way to apply conformal coating, and it works well for prototypes, touch-up, rework and small batches of uncomplicated boards. A few techniques make the results noticeably better.

  • Brush lightly with small strokes. Too much pressure pushes the coating unevenly and can trap air.
  • Flip the brush and use both sides of the head so the coating goes down evenly.
  • Recoat the brush liberally rather than dragging a nearly dry brush across the board.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the coating manufacturer's mixing, thinning and curing instructions. Higher-viscosity coatings are harder to brush, so check whether the material is meant for brush application at all.
  • Clean the brush promptly after use with the recommended solvent so it stays usable for the next job.

When brushing is not enough

Hand brushing has limits. Film thickness is hard to control, coverage can be uneven on dense boards, and it is slow for production volumes.
