ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. Here the manufacturer owns the design. The factory has already developed a product or platform, and the customer selects it from the catalog, then customizes branding, packaging, colors, or minor features. The ODM handles both design and production.

For finished assembly, this means the customer buys a ready-made product that is assembled, tested, and packaged by the manufacturer, with the customer's logo applied. It is often called white-label or private-label manufacturing. OEM gives you complete control over materials, dimensions, and performance, which matters when your product must meet specific certifications or fit a particular application. ODM limits changes to branding, packaging, and minor options, which is fine for commodity products but restrictive for differentiated ones.

Time to market. ODM starts from an existing, proven design, so you can reach the market faster. OEM requires development, prototyping, and validation before mass production, which adds time but gives you a product no one else can copy.

Cost structure. OEM carries higher upfront costs for tooling and engineering, but per-unit costs fall as volume grows. ODM avoids most upfront investment because the manufacturer has already absorbed the design cost, which is reflected in the unit price.
