What is the difference between IPC-A-600H and IPC-6012?

If you buy or build printed circuit boards, you have probably seen both IPC-A-600 and IPC-6012 cited on inspection reports, certificates, and purchase orders. The names look similar, both come from IPC, and both deal with PCB quality, so it is easy to treat them as the same thing. They are not.

In one sentence: IPC-A-600H is a visual acceptance standard for bare boards, while IPC-6012 is a qualification and performance specification that defines what a rigid PCB must actually withstand. One tells you what a board should look like; the other tells you what it must be able to do.

What is IPC-A-600H?

IPC-A-600, "Acceptability of Printed Boards," is the visual inspection standard for unpopulated, bare PCBs. It uses photographs and illustrations to show target, acceptable, and non-conforming conditions for features such as conductor width and spacing, annular ring, solder mask, plating, surface finish, and dimensional tolerances.

IPC-A-600H is the H revision of this document. Each revision refreshes the photographic examples and acceptance criteria to keep pace with current materials and manufacturing processes. The document is organized by product class (Class 1, 2, and 3), so an inspector can judge quickly whether a board meets the class specified on the drawing.

The strength of IPC-A-600H is that it is practical and visual. An inspector can check a finished board against clear reference pictures without any destructive testing. Its limitation is that it covers only what can be seen and measured on the surface. It cannot verify what is happening inside the board — the inner layers, the plating inside drilled holes, or how the board behaves under thermal and electrical stress.

What is IPC-6012?

IPC-6012, "Qualification and Performance Specification for Rigid Printed Boards," is the performance standard for rigid PCBs. It defines the qualification and conformance requirements a board must meet, including:

  • Material requirements and construction
  • Electrical requirements and tests
  • Thermal stress testing
  • Microsection analysis of inner layers and plated through-holes
  • Solderability after accelerated aging
  • Impedance control
  • Ionic cleanliness
  • Surface finish requirements

Unlike IPC-A-600H, IPC-6012 includes destructive and performance testing. A board design is qualified by testing samples through microsection, thermal stress, and electrical tests, and conformance testing is then repeated periodically on production lots.

How the two standards work together

IPC-6012 does not replace IPC-A-600H — it builds on it. IPC-6012 requires that the board also meet the IPC-A-600 visual acceptance criteria, and it adds performance requirements beyond what visual inspection can verify. In practice the two documents are used side by side: the board is designed and manufactured to IPC-6012, while the visual acceptance criteria come from IPC-A-600.

Product classes explained

Both standards use the same three product classes:

  • Class 1 — general consumer electronics where cosmetic appearance is not critical
  • Class 2 — dedicated service electronics where extended life and uninterrupted performance are expected
  • Class 3 — high-reliability electronics for medical, automotive safety, aerospace, and military applications where downtime cannot be tolerated

Which one should you specify?

For a simple prototype or a low-risk two-layer board, IPC-A-600H Class 2 may be sufficient. For consumer electronics and standard industrial controls, specify IPC-A-600 Class 2 together with IPC-6012 Class 2 qualification on the first article. For telecom, medical, and automotive applications, specify IPC-A-600 Class 3 plus IPC-6012 Class 3 qualification, and repeat conformance testing periodically.

Remember that a board can pass IPC-A-600H Class 3 visually and still fail IPC-6012 qualification because of hidden defects such as inner-layer breakout, plating voids, or delamination after thermal stress. For high-reliability programs, always require both documents in the purchase order.
