  • Soak: the next zones hold the board on a plateau around 150–180°C for about 60–120 seconds. This lets heavy ground planes and small components catch up with each other in temperature while the flux activates and cleans the pad surfaces.
  • Reflow (peak): the board is raised above the liquidus temperature of the solder alloy — around 217°C for lead-free SAC, with a typical peak of 235–250°C for 45–90 seconds. By this stage the solder has melted and wetted both the pad and the component lead, forming the intermetallic bond that gives the joint its strength.
  • Cooling: the final zones cool the board at a controlled rate of roughly 2–4°C per second so the solder solidifies into a fine, mechanically strong grain structure without warping the board or cracking components.

Modern boards rarely heat evenly. A design may carry tiny 01005 resistors next to a large BGA package or a shielded inductor, and those parts have very different thermal masses — the small one warms almost instantly while the heavy one lags behind. If the profile is not finely tuned, the light part can be over-cooked before the heavy part even reaches the melting point, which is a recipe for cold joints on one side of the board and damaged components on the other.

Extra zones give the operator more settings to balance these differences, keeping the temperature spread across the board small right up to the reflow stage. Leading-edge ten-zone machines can also run a nitrogen atmosphere, which reduces oxidation in the tunnel and improves wetting on hard-to-solder finishes such as OSP and fine-pitch pads.
