What is immersion silver surface finish in PCB making?

When a bare copper PCB comes off the production line, its pads are exposed and ready to oxidize. Before those boards can be assembled, a manufacturer applies a surface finish — a thin protective layer that keeps the copper clean and solderable. Immersion silver, often shortened to ImAg, is one of the most common options in PCB making. It deposits a microscopically thin layer of silver directly onto exposed copper pads through a chemical displacement reaction, leaving a flat, lead-free, highly conductive surface that solders cleanly.

How Immersion Silver Works

Immersion silver is not electroplating. No external current is applied. Instead, the board is dipped into a silver-containing bath, and silver ions in the solution replace copper atoms on the pad surface. The result is a pure silver layer sitting directly on the copper, with no nickel barrier underneath. That detail matters for high-frequency designs: nickel conducts less well than copper or silver, and at high frequencies current hugs the surface of the conductor (a behavior known as the skin effect), so a nickel layer in the signal path can add loss. Because immersion silver skips the nickel, it is a frequent choice for RF circuits, antenna feed lines, and high-speed digital boards.

The Immersion Silver Process in PCB Making

In a typical pcb board making process, immersion silver is applied in a controlled sequence. First, the board is cleaned and micro-etched to strip away oxide and slightly roughen the copper so the silver can grip. Next, a pre-dip activates the copper surface. The board then sits in the silver bath for one to three minutes while the displacement reaction builds the deposit to its target thickness — commonly 5–18 microinches (about 0.12–0.45 µm) per IPC-4553. After deposition, the board is rinsed, treated with an anti-tarnish solution, dried, and inspected. Thickness is usually verified with X-ray fluorescence, and solderability is checked before the boards are packed.

Why Designers Choose Immersion Silver

The finish earns its place for a few concrete reasons. Silver is among the most conductive metals, so signal loss stays low. The deposit is flat, which helps with fine-pitch SMT and BGA assembly, where a bumpy surface can cause solder defects. It is lead-free and RoHS-friendly. And it usually costs less than ENIG, the nickel-gold finish that is its closest competitor.

The Catch: Tarnish and Handling

Immersion silver does have a catch: it tarnishes. Moisture, sulfur, chlorine, fingerprints, and poor storage can dull or discolor the surface, and a tarnished pad may not solder reliably. Boards finished this way are typically expected to be assembled within about six months, and they need sealed packaging, glove handling, and dry, low-sulfur storage. If a project involves long warehouse storage or repeated opening and resealing of packages, ENIG is often easier to manage.

Immersion Silver vs ENIG, OSP, and HASL

How does it stack up against the alternatives? ENIG offers a longer shelf life and a more stable appearance but costs more and adds a nickel layer. OSP is cheaper and flat but has a short process window and is less robust. HASL is familiar and inexpensive but not flat enough for fine-pitch work. Immersion silver sits in the middle: better electrical performance and flatness than OSP, lower cost than ENIG, and a good fit for RF, high-speed, and fine-pitch boards when assembly timing can be controlled.
