Static damage is invisible. A board can pass every test on the line, get sealed into a box, and still arrive dead at your customer because of a single electrostatic discharge during handling or shipping. That is why "finished assembly with anti-static packaging" is not a nice extra to negotiate later — it is a core requirement. Finding the right partner means checking how a factory actually handles, stores and packs sensitive electronics, not just what it promises on its homepage.
Anti-static packaging is more than dropping boards into pink ESD bags. A genuine program covers each element of the shipment: shielding bags with a metallic layer for high-sensitivity boards, dissipative foam used for cushioning so boards and pins do not rub against each other, conductive trays when moving several assemblies together, and vacuum or moisture-barrier sealing for moisture-sensitive devices. A credible shop works to recognized standards — IEC 61340-5-1 for ESD control programs and ANSI/ESD S541 for packaging materials — and can point to test reports plus the ESD awareness symbol printed on each package.
Finished assembly is the step where tested PCBA boards are combined with enclosures, wiring harnesses, connectors, human-machine interfaces and other modules into a packaged product. Ask whether the factory runs the line to standard operating procedures, performs station self-inspection and full QC inspection, follows up with QA and OBA sampling, and keeps barcode traceability through the entire build. Get concrete answers rather than general assurances. Which bags are used — shielding or merely dissipative? What foam thickness cushions the boards? Are moisture-sensitive packs vacuum-sealed? Do labels carry the ESD symbol together with lot and date codes? Do you have test data for surface resistivity, charge decay and shielding effectiveness as required under ANSI/ESD S541? A partner that cannot describe its materials in this detail is a warning sign.
A board should be packed only after it has cleared inspection and functional testing — automated optical inspection, X-ray, in-circuit testing, functional testing, thermal imaging, and high- and low-temperature reliability checks where the product calls for them. Packaging is the last step in the chain; a flawed board that gets packed is a double loss of time and money. Certifications show that a factory documents its handling and packing steps instead of improvising. Look for ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 13485 where medical products are involved, IATF 16949 for automotive programs, and assembly carried out to IPC-A-610 on IPC-A-600 boards. Certificates alone are not proof, so combine them with a factory visit or an audit of the packing area before you commit.
