Two hardware project managers receive identical PCBA quotes. Same board count, same delivery date, same unit price. One receives assembled and tested boards wrapped in anti-static bags. The other receives assembled, tested, conformal-coated boards packed inside finished enclosures with wiring harnesses attached, ready for the shipping carton. Same "turnkey" label. Very different outcomes.
The gap between these two deliveries is not a pricing problem. It is a scope problem. Most turnkey PCBA service providers cover PCB fabrication, component procurement, and SMT/DIP assembly well. Where many stop short is the post-assembly chain: environmental protection, functional verification under load, and finished-product integration. Those steps are where schedule delays and field failures live.

Box-build, or finished-product assembly, is where the board becomes a product. A box-build line operating under the same QMS ensures that mechanical integration — enclosure fit, harness routing, connector seating — is inspected with the same traceability system that tracked every component from incoming QC through SMT placement.
When comparing providers, the inspection and test stack matters, but so does the breadth of the manufacturing chain. The following checklist covers both dimensions.
Not every project needs every step under one roof. A quick prototype run for an internal proof-of-concept may not require conformal coating or box-build. But for products heading into regulated environments — medical devices requiring ISO 13485 traceability, automotive electronics under IATF 16949 process controls, or industrial systems expected to run for years in harsh conditions — the post-assembly steps are not optional. They are where field reliability is determined.
For transportation electronics, new-energy systems, security hardware, medical devices, communication equipment, and AI-related products, the difference between a board that passes AOI and a board that survives humidity cycling, vibration, and thermal shock is the difference between a product launch and a product recall.
A genuine turnkey manufacturing partner does not draw the line at the soldering exit. The scope runs from the first discussion about design files through the last box sealed and ready for shipment — with engineering support, inspection evidence, and traceability data at every stage in between. If your current supplier stops after SMT and hands you a list of recommended coating and integration shops, the chain is not as turnkey as the label suggests.
